Kenya Railways, on Wednesday, April 19, announced additional coaches for Madaraka Express Passenger Service Trains.

In a notice, Kenya Railways noted that the additional coaches would be available from Wednesday, April 19, to Friday, May 5.

According to Kenya Railways, the additional coaches will help the locomotive match the increased demand among commuters.

The first break slated in the coming weeks also prompted the latest decision to add more coaches to the Madaraka Express Passenger Service Trains.

"The school holidays are here with us. To facilitate increased demand, we have added the number of coaches on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service trains, effective April 19 to  May 5, 2023," the notice read.

"Book now to avoid disappointments," Kenya Railways further commuters.

Increasing coaches followed the last-minute rush experienced during Easter weekend, where reports indicated that all coaches had been booked.

The Madaraka Express Passenger Service serves over 10 destinations between Mombasa and Suswa stations.

On the other hand, Kisumu Safari Train ferries commuters from Nairobi to the lakeside city. The train takes 12 hours, from the Nairobi Central Station to Kisumu.

In June 2022, a night train was introduced to cover the route following requests by the users.

To encourage commuters to use SGR, Kenya Railways announced plans to introduce ultra-modern coaches for the Nairobi - Mombasa route.

Kenya Railways noted that SGR would introduce modern coaches with WI-FI, executive lounges, and hotels.

Kenya Railways Managing Director, Philip Maingi indicated that the coaches would be fitted with infotainment screens, conference halls, hotels and sleeping areas. It was further expected to be fitted with working areas.

"We are now going to put better services in terms of wi-fi in Madaraka Express. Business women and men in this country will now have conference halls, we will have dining in trains, hold events in the train and we are going to bring modern coaches," Maingi stated during a past interview.
