President William Ruto, on Thursday, April 20, received a Ksh40 million (USD300,000) cheque from the  International Organisation for Migration (IOM) at State House.

The Head of State noted that IOM Regional Director for East and Horn of Africa Mohammed Abdiker issued him the funds after the two met.

According to the President, who expressed his gratitude for the contribution, the funds will be channelled towards raising Kenya to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Collaboration has the power to drive our global climate agenda sustainably.

“We are grateful to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) for their generous contribution towards building a sustainable future for all,” Ruto stated.

Mitigation of the effects of climate change is one of the president's big agendas, and had been encouraging the planting of trees across the country as one of the sustainable plans.

On Wednesday, January 11, he directed the over 1900 administration police graduates to plant at least 30 trees in their homes to commemorate graduation.

He further directed security agencies in Nairobi to initiate a campaign to plant over 10 million trees in Eastlands and other parts of the city.

"We have a major problem in matters of our environment in Kenya and the world at large. I have requested the commandant of this campus and other stakeholders in the security sector to help us plant over 10 million trees in Nairobi," he stated.

In the past, the Head of State had been engaging with different international institutions to secure funds and other investment deals, including a Ksh3.6 trillion deal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in November 2022.

“We are leaving Egypt with investments upwards of $30 billion, as you have seen we have signed off agreements with the UK, with private sector developers and we are leaving here with firm agreements on the exploitation of geothermal resources, wind, solar resources and shortly we will be on the highway on getting Kenya where we want her to be,” he announced after the summit.

In addition, Ruto announced in February 2023 that the government will issue every household in the country with a cooking gas cylinder in the following three years to ensure that Kenyans use clean energy.

"We want to prevent all those health issues that are a result of smoke that come because of using wood as fuel. We want our women to use clean energy to cook," he stated.

Earlier on February 18, the government, in collaboration with the African Union(AU), Mozambique and Portugal, held a high-level summit in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia, to address the impact of drought and climate change in Africa.
