Former presidential candidate and Agano Party leader David Mwaure Waihiga was on Thursday, April 20, appointed to serve as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND).
Environment CS Soipan Tuya made the appointment via a Gazette notice. Mwaure was selected to serve for a period of three years with effect from Thursday, April 20, 2023.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 24 (3) of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry appointed David Mwaure Waihiga," read part of the notice.
Mwaure was appointed to the Ruto government alongside former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi who will serve as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya, also for a period of three years by President William Ruto.
In the notice, Kiraitu was scheduled to begin serving his term on Thursday, April 19, 2023.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoints Kiraitu Murungi," read part of the notice.
The Board of Directors oversees the strategic management and growth of the corporation. It deliberates on various strategic business activities including business expansion, marketing, human resource development, finance, and others as they emerge.
Mwaure Role at NETFUND
NETFUND is a state corporation under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry in Kenya. It was established by the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) 1999 to mobilize and avail resources for environmental management in the country.
Some of the tasks of the fund include capacity building, environmental awards, and facilitating environmental publications, scholarships, and grants in Kenya.
"As a Fund, we provide a platform for environmental conservationists and funding agents to converse and share bankable ideas. Through our unmatched convening power, we coordinate environmental sector players and create synergy to deliver well-researched initiatives competently for effective environmental management in Kenya," reads part of the fund's mission.
