The National Police Service (NPS), on Saturday, April 22, warned motorists to approach Mombasa Road with caution.
Traffic marshalls warned that the road had flooded along Sultan Hamud Township, following heavy rains across the country.
"Flooding has resulted in a snarl-up of traffic along that busy highway section.
"We wish to appeal to all motorists approaching Sultan Hamud to drive carefully, be patient and avoid overlapping," NPS urged in a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke.
It, nonetheless, added that police officers were deployed to control the traffic and monitor the situation.
Hundreds of motorists were affected by the floods which forced many drivers to slow down hence causing a traffic snarl-up.
Motorists were asked to consider terminating their journeys until when the raging waters shall have subsided in order to avoid any risks.
The floods at Sultan Hamud town in Makueni County affected businesses, especially, transportation which is the main economic activity in the area.
The town serves vehicles that travel to and from Nairobi to Mombasa, which are the two largest economic hubs in the country.
It serves as a resting place for many long-distance drivers who often seek accommodation in the area before proceeding to other countries with the East African Community.
Sultan Hamud also lies on the main railway line of Kenya Railways between the coast at Mombasa and the national capital of Nairobi.
The distance Sultan Hamud to Mombasa is around 380 kilometres while it's 110 KM when traveling from the same town to Nairobi's Central Business District.
On Thursday, 13 April 2023, the Kenya Red Cross warned that motorists were drivers plying Mombasa Road were likely to experience serious flooding.
