Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, on Saturday, April 22, explained that cameras installed on major roads would aid in administering instant fines in a new move to combat road carnages.

Speaking in Kiambu County, the CS stated that the government planned to install cameras on major highways with command centres to monitor the footage.

Murkomen indicated that officers in the command centre would also be tasked with identifying vehicles flaunting traffic rules.

Upon identification, local area police will then be alerted for the driver to be hunted down.

"Once the camera captures you breaking the law, we shall immediately alert the local police, who will come and give you your heavy fine.

"Your licence will then be confiscated, and you will not be able to drive," he stated while launching a training for drivers.

The CS asserted that the move would benefit road users even as he raised concern over a number of drivers that were putting the lives of Kenyans at risk.

He cited an example of the Naivasha accident on April 18, where six students lost their lives

According to Murkomen's report, the driver attempted to overtake at a blind spot during a traffic snarl-up.

Mukomen added that the cameras and instant fines would work alongside the new measures announced by the government earlier. Some of the measures included mandatory driving retests for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) drivers.

Earlier, the CS had listed the Mombasa - Nairobi  - Nakuru - Busia highway as the first beneficiary for the camera project.

"That project will be done by the end of this year and we shall ensure that those who flaunt traffic rules are caught"  he stated then.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,072 people lost their lives in road accidents between January - March 2023.

The Nairobi - Nakuru Highway registered the highest number of accidents in the same period of review.
