The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Wednesday, April 26, clarified that the payment for the digital number plates was only through the eCitizen portal.

NTSA, while responding to queries from members of the public, noticed a crop of tweeps attempting to mislead motorists seeking the service.

One of the crooks claimed that they could assist the applicants with the application process at a fee. The Authority stepped and issued a clarification.

"Application is via the motor vehicle owner's account accessible through . Payment is through the eCitizenKenya platform, not the number provided here," NTSA wrote.

The user attempted to take advantage of motorists frustrated by the long waiting time and offered to expedite the process at a total cost of Ksh4,000.

He explained that the amount would cover the application fee and delivery of the digital number plates to the doorsteps of those who met the costs.

However, NTSA maintained that the entire process should cost Ksh3,050, and advised those with pending applications to check with the Centres where they applied to collect the new plates.

Motorists were urged to follow this easy nine-step process broken down in a pictorial shared on the NTSA website.

In addition, the institution notified that applications are processed within seven working days and directed anyone to report individuals at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) who demand bribes to speed up the process.

Meanwhile, NTSA embarked on a nationwide crackdown to fish out unroadworthy motor vehicles from Kenyan roads following directives from Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen.

Murkomen further directed the regulator to lead a multi-agency crackdown on enterprises that sell motor vehicle spare parts, after establishing that a number of users sold poor-quality products.

The declaration came after a spike in road accidents that claimed the lives of several Kenyans.
