Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua on Thursday, April 27, announced that the government had signed a deal to build an overpass on Ngong’ Road during his trip to Spain.
In a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Jose Manuel Albares, Spain also committed to helping Kenya improve the railway system.
“I was honored to hold bilateral discussions with Spain’s minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation Jose Manuel Albares.
“We also discussed the various partnerships and commitment by Spain towards Kenya which includes funds for improving our railway system and roads (in particular an overpass at Junction Mall area of Nairobi’s Ngong road),” he stated.
The CS further noted that part of the discussions centered around introducing Spanish language training for Kenyans to benefit from language exchange and scholarship programmes in Spain.
“Top of the agenda was signing a memorandum of understanding that will see Kenyans trained in the Spanish language even as we train them in English.
“This will enhance Spanish as a major language of study in Kenya and open up opportunities for Kenyan youth abroad,” the CS stated.
Learning Spanish is aimed at helping Kenyans access job opportunities in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.
According to Rosetta Stone, an American education technology software company, Spanish is the official language in 2 countries and has over 500 million speakers worldwide.
His trip to Spain follows his trip to the US where he urged US entrepreneurs to invest in Kenya. Spain has on various occasions committed to strengthening relations with Kenya.
In October 2022, Spain’s Ambassador to Kenya, Cristina Díaz Fernández-Gil, noted that bilateral relations between Kenya and Spain would deepen under President William Ruto’s administration.
Previously, on April 25, 2023, CS Mutua announced job opportunities for Kenyans to work in the US in a deal with President Joe Biden's Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, that included the speedup of visa applications for Kenyans travelling to the US.
