7 Driving Licenses You Can Get Only If You are 22 Years & Above

Did you know that there are driving licenses that require you to be 22 years and above?

Many Kenyans apply for basic driving licenses once they attain 18 years or older but are unaware that some of the driving licenses can only be given if the motorist is 22 years old and above.

These clusters include those in the heavy trucks business and construction industry among others.

The categories of driving licenses include:

A man driving a vehicle.

C1 

The minimum age is 22 years old.

This category covers light trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight of between 3500 kilograms (kg) and 7500 kg with a trailer not exceeding 750 kilograms. 

This is for medium trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight of more than 7,500 kg. 

The minimum age is 24. The driver also needs 2 years of experience driving with a C1 category.

CD 

This is for heavy goods vehicles used for the transportation of hazardous materials. The minimum age is 30 years old.

CE 

It’s for heavy trucks with a heavy trailer or semi-trailer. The minimum age is 28 years old.

D1 

This is for vans with a maximum of 14 passengers. The holder should be between 22 years and 65 years old. 

D2 

It’s for mini-buses with a maximum seating capacity of between 14 and 32 passengers. The minimum age is 25 years with a maximum of 65 years.

D3

It’s for large buses with a seating capacity of 33 years or more. 

The minimum age is 30 years with a maximum of 65 years. The minimum experience required is 3 years of driving a with category D2 license.

In conclusion, Kenyans are advised to use the e-citizen platform to apply for a driving license through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
