Pastor Ezekiel Odero's lawyer Danstan Omari  on Sunday, May 7, revealed that the televangelist incurred losses worth Ksh20 million due to the closure of the New Life Prayer Centre and Church based in Kilifi County.

In a letter written by Omari and addressed to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, the closure led to a loss of tithe and offerings worth an estimated Ksh17 million.

In a breakdown of the losses incurred by the pastor, Omari listed accommodation charges at Ksh2 million and wasted food worth Ksh500,000.

The lawyer claimed that the intimidation tactics employed by police officers also affected the ongoing construction at the pastor's property.

"You are put to notice that as an effect of your officers barricading the road leading to the church and the rest of the church compound, about 2,500 workers that were reasonably expected to access the compound to continue with the construction works that are evident in the compound, the time frames within which the various projects were expected to end will undoubtedly be affected," read part of the letter.

As a result, Omari claimed that the opening date for the Kilifi International School and the Kilifi University would be postponed and thus affect the students who sought to enroll in the institution.

He further advocated for the  Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the conduct of the officers who blocked access to the premises.

"It is for the above-mentioned inconveniences and brazen constitutional breaches by officers acting on your instructions that you are warned of legal action being taken against you in person and other higher ranking police officers who have resolved to act with impunity and in abuse of your constitutional mandate.

"Be warned that we have instructions to prosecute you for your continued violation of our client’s human rights and fundamental freedoms and we further copy IPOA so that your conduct can be investigated with the likelihood of causing your prosecution for acting in abuse of your office," read part of the letter.

The lawyer noted that his client acted in line with the terms stipulated in court for his release such as prohibiting him from addressing or making reference to the Shakahola Massacre.

The news comes after a court in Mombasa County on Thursday, May 4, certified pastor Odero's application for the State to reopen his New Life Prayer Centre and Church as urgent. The case will be mentioned on Monday, May 8.
