Among the people who arrived at the scene to rescue the victims who were trapped in the Tuk-tuk were High School students who were on their way home.

The accident led to a traffic snarl-up within Kisumu Central Business District since the underpass connected several routes.

Traffic police officers also arrived at the scene and began re-directing traffic to other routes which had less flow of motor vehicles.

Kisumu County Emergency Medical Services reached the scene minutes after the accident in order to treat the patients.

The victims were literally trapped within their Tuk-tuk, and the fire brigade had to cut it into pieces in order to remove the bodies.

Residents expressed their shock at the late evening accident that brought to question the structural integrity of Kisumu roads.

On Tuesday, 20 December 2022, the National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) disclosed intervention measures put in place to protect motorists after the number of fatalities soared high in 2022.

According to NTSA, deaths recorded between January and December 13, 2022, increased to 4432 from 4271 in the same period in 2021.

The interventions included road safety awareness and education that will involve sensitisation of drivers and passengers and mainstreaming road safety in the National school curriculum.
