Afya Centre is one of the most iconic buildings in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) along Tom Mboya Street.

For decades, Nairobi residents have used it as a landmark and meeting point.

Despite its popularity and significance, little is known about the owners behind the 21-storey building.

Kenyans.co.ke researched and established that the building is owned by shareholders of Afya Investments Co-Operative Society Limited.

“We own 16 residential maisonettes located at Kamburu Drive off Ngong Road and Afya Co-operative Center, a 21-storey high-rise building, situated in Nairobi City,” the Society states.

The Sacco was founded in May 1971, by twenty members who sought ways to diversify revenue streams for the company.

The co-founders are not the only owners of the building as the revenue of the building is shared equally among all shareholders who now are over 38,000.

“Afya Investments are fully owned by the shareholders of Afya Sacco. Both the maisonettes and Co-operative House are rented out to generate income for members.

“This income flows back to members as dividends which are distributed yearly,” the Sacco explains on the proceedings of the revenues collected.

Afya Centre generates millions of shillings annually as it is a major business centre that houses specialized medical clinics, banks, and restaurants amongst other offices.

Apart from renting it out to investors, the shareholders also use the building as the Headquarters of both the Afya Sacco Society and the Front Office Services Activities of the Sacco (FOSA).

Any Kenyan can become a part owner of the Afya Centre building by becoming a member of the Sacco.

This is achieved through paying a one-off fee of Ksh1000 and buying a minimum of 1,000 shares of Ksh20 each.
