A bus belonging to a flower farm rolled over killing at least five people and injuring several others on Monday, May 22, about 1 kilometer from Isinya town.

The bus, which was ferrying staff to work, crashed at around 7.30 am.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Joseph Mutiso who witnessed the accident stated that the bus lost control and crashed by the roadside.

"I saw a number of occupants jumping out of the window after the bus had rolled and settled," Mutiso stated while recounting the tragic event.

Further reports indicated that the bus, headed towards Kiserian, lost its brakes leading to the grisly accident.

Mutiso confirmed that several of the flower farm workers were trapped in the wreckage for a few minutes before help arrived.

Shortly after, police and rescuers arrived at the scene and, with the help of other motorists, began rescuing the trapped passengers.

"Ambulances were called but they took a bit long to arrive at the scene of the accident, prompting private car owners to respond," Mutiso explained.

At the same, time those who were believed to have died in the early morning crash were transferred to a nearby hospital.

"It is not possible for me to tell the number of people who died in the accident but you could clearly tell that some of them were dead due to the nature of their bodies," Mutiso explained.

Police officers and other authorities were yet to issue a statement of the crash by the time of publishing.

Grim Stats

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) 2023 accident reports, a total of 4,432 road accidents have occurred since January resulting in 4,690 deaths and 9,933 injuries. That was an increase of 1,135 accidents, 1,111 deaths, and 2,896 injuries compared to 2022.

The report also showed that the most common causes of road accidents in Kenya wer speeding, reckless driving, and drunk driving.

Other contributing factors include poor road infrastructure, lack of driver education, and non-compliance with traffic laws.

NTSA, therefore, called upon motorists to be more cautious on the road and obey traffic laws while promising to work with other stakeholders to improve road safety in Kenya.
