Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Thursday, May 25, addressed claims that he had sent away philanthropists from the county.
This was after reports emerged that Mombasa Cement Limited owner Hasu Patel had been barred from clearing hospital bills for stuck patients.
Nassir confirmed that it was true his administration had made such an order, which was aimed at bringing sanity to the sector.
“I am not a madman to chase investors out of Mombasa, however, rules must be followed.
“We agreed as a cabinet that if there is any charity donation, it should be made according to set rules,” he explained.
Nassir revealed that he was happy to see people coming out to clear hospital bills but the manner it was being executed was not right.
“I cannot have 42 hospitals and every hospital is writing to donors begging for help,” he explained why he was against the idea.
The governor further animated that seeking donors was being done without his knowledge.
“We cannot have a system that lacks discipline. We will have order and I will not back down on that,” he vowed.
The friction between the governor and Hasu saw the billionaire remove sculptures that he had erected at Makupa’s roundabout for beautification.
Apart from rehabilitating Mombasa City, the billionaire has also been engaged in various corporate social responsibility projects in the Coast region and in other parts of the country.
On Wednesday, May 3, it was reported that the billionaire had agreed to incinerate 73 tonnes of contaminated food from Mukumu Girls Secondary School in Kakamega County.
One of the beneficiaries of Hasu’s philanthropic acts told Kenyans.co.ke that the billionaire helped her clear the bill for a complicated lung surgery.
