How to Join NIS: Requirements for Certificate, Diploma & Degree Holders

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) is a disciplined civilian intelligence agency responsible for the republic's security intelligence and counterintelligence.

Unlike other disciplined forces in the country, NIS does not employ through mass recruitment. Moreover, hardly does the agency advertise career opportunities. 

Those interested in working for the service are required to submit an online application; if qualified, the agency contacts them.

NIS prides itself as an equal opportunity employer that seeks to recruit the most qualified persons for the job.

As such, it actively recruits Kenyans who have undergraduate, diploma, and certificate qualifications.

The recruitment and selection process of officers in NIS is undertaken at the following entry levels; Graduate Trainees, Diploma Trainees, and Certificate Trainees.

Those seeking to apply for graduate entry must be aged between 22 - 31 years as well as possess a degree certificate from a recognized academic institution.

For the diploma entry, prospective candidates must be aged between 20-30 years and be in possession of a college diploma, earned over at least 18 months of study in a recognized institution.

The requirements for those interested in joining NIS at certificate trainee entry level are; Be aged between 20 – 26 years and be in possession of a relevant certificate from a recognized institution, covering at least 6 months of study.

All applicants must be Kenyan citizens without a criminal record and are physically fit.

How to apply

If qualified for any of the positions, you are required to create a profile by clicking nis.go.ke and submit your personal details.

Details required during creating a profile include; 

  1. National ID (Mandatory)
  2. Passport photo image (Mandatory)
  3. University/College/Tertiary education completion certificate(s)-(Mandatory)
  4. Secondary school completion certificate (Mandatory)
  5. Secondary school leaving certificate (Optional)
