Engineers Board of Kenya, in collaboration with other government stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, on Tuesday, May 30, instituted reforms in the building and construction sector.

In the latest measures, the Engineers Board of Kenya rolled out an online portal targeting constructors undertaking various projects.

According to the board, all certified engineers must register on the online portal. Besides uploading all their credentials, engineers and project constructors must include all the projects they are undertaking.

The portal will track and monitor all projects to address the issue of buildings collapsing and shoddy road construction.

"We have developed engineers project development portal where all engineers are expected to log in and register projects they are handling. This will enhance the efficiency and effective monitoring of the professional engineering services and works," Erastus Mwongera, chairperson of the Engineering Board of Kenya, insisted.

"This engineering registration portal is expected to reduce cases of building collapse," he added.

The Ministry of Transport, on the other hand, lauded the initiative indicating that it was key to addressing several instances of shoddy road projects which had compelled the government to suspend some contractors.

Roads Principal Secretary Joseph Mbugua insisted that the portal would improve service delivery and fast-track various projects in the country to avoid wastage of public resources.

"The Ministry is implementing reforms to improve the efficiency and the effectiveness of the transport sector by modernisation of the regulatory framework through computation and streamlining processes to reduce hurdles and improve service delivery," Joseph Mbugua stated.

On Friday, May 14, President William Ruto chased away a contractor from a Ksh500 billion water project in Machakos County.

His administration was forced to chase the contractor away before the project's completion after he failed to deliver.

"In Mwala, we have a water project valued at Ksh500 million. There is a stubborn contractor, and we have chased him away.

"We are looking for another contractor in order to get enough water in the country and we are starting it in every county," Ruto stated.
