A video of a five-storey building collapsing in the Kariobangi South area stirred debate on Saturday, May 6, with questions raised on the safety of the occupants.

The video was widely shared, worrying residents in nearby areas, considering the possible dangers and risks of a collapsed building.

"I hope everyone had cleared the building beforehand," a concerned Kenyan worried.

While others sent condolence messages to the victims, others blamed the government.

A reverse search via Invid and Google Reverse Search, conducted by Kenyans.co.ke, established that the building collapsed on August 2, 2016, and all the tenants had been evacuated.

The five-storey building was marked for demolition after developing cracks forcing the tenants to be evacuated.

Reports from the emergency response team indicated that no casualties were recorded.

However, the area MCA Robert Mbatia argued that the house was not marked for demolition, and tenants were moving in.

He added that the building was built in a swampy area.

"I have lost my household items in the building. I wanted to get a few items but I was cautioned against it," one of the tenants recalled.

The incident occurred after a building in Kiambu County developed cracks forcing the county government to evacuate all the tenants before the 10-year-old building collapsed.

Following the scare, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi called for the audit of all residential and commercial buildings in the county.
