Lawrence Nzuki, a victim of a multimillion job scandal in Uasin Gishu, appeared before the Labour and Social Welfare Senate committee on Thursday, June 8, demanding justice for losses incurred.
Addressing the committee, Nzuki broke down while lamenting how the scheme affected his general life, forcing him to put some plans on hold.
He pleaded with the Senate to intervene and help him recover his money to allow him to pursue his master's.
“Kindly, I need my money back because I want to care for my mom. I want to return to school and am already running out of time.
“I had goals and hopes for my life. I wanted to get my master's before I get to 30 years. Now I am approaching 30 and I have not gone to school yet,” Nzuki lamented.
Following Nzuki's emotional appeal, the committee summoned the director of the accused recruitment agency, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha and the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome to respond to the alleged scheme.
The committee noted that police officers had been implicated in the case by victims who claimed they were threatened by the officers for complaining and demanding refunds from the agency.
More than 8,000 youths were reported to have lost millions in the job scandal after being promised to be flown to Qatar during the World Cup tournament between November and December 2022.
Most victims had applied for a six months contract job during the FIFA world cup 2022. The scheduled travel date passed without successful candidates receiving notification from the agency.
Many of those aggrieved visited the agency several times to inquire about the way forward or get an update on their travel and jobs statuses but were snubbed.
A report by the committee detailed that the recruitment agency had advertised the jobs on social media and held roadshows, followed by a launch on May 20, 2021, in Eldoret, attended by notable leaders.
