Brian Mutie: Kenyan Lawyer With 8 Degrees, Attended 13 Universities & Now Pursuing 2nd PhD

After attaining 8 degrees and several other certificates, Dr Brian Mutie has attained some of the highest academic accolades a scholar can dream of.

The learned fellow, who serves as an advocate of the High Court, is a governance expert with over 15 years of experience.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the learned lawyer revealed that in his academic journey, he attended some of the most prestigious universities both nationally and internationally and is still pursuing his second Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

“I have over 8 degrees and I am currently doing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law at the University of Nairobi,” he stated.

Education background

Dr Mutie began his remarkable academic journey at Mung’eli Primary School before proceeding to Mukuyuni High School in Kaiti Constituency, Makueni County.

His academic excellence picked pace on June 2008 after enrolling at Daystar University and graduating on June 2012 with his first degree, a Bachelor’s Degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Transformation (International Studies).

Since then, the Advocate has attained numerous undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate certifications from top-notch universities across the world.

The graduate and undergraduate certifications are; Introduction to International Criminal Law (Case Western Reserve University), Graduate Certificate in Public Policy Challenges of the 21st Century (University of Virginia), Graduate Certificate Disaster Preparedness (University of Pittsburgh) and Graduate Certificate Introduction to Environmental Law and Policy (University of North Carolina School of the Arts).

Others include; a Graduate Certificate in Internet History, Internet and Security (University of Michigan), a Graduate Certificate in Research Methods (University of London), and a Bachelor's Degree in Law from UoN.

The lawyer also possesses a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law and three Master’s degrees.

Dr Mutie earned his first Masters’s Degree from UoN in 2013 after graduating in Project Planning and Management.

In 2021, he graduated from Africa Nazarene University with a Master of Science in Governance, Peace and Stability (Security Management and Governance majors).

He also boasts of a Master of Law in International Law from Liverpool John Moores University.

The lawyer also holds a PhD in Governance and Leadership from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Law from UoN.

Dr Mutie, in an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.kerevealed that he started his career in the entertainment industry.

“Before joining Daystar University for my undergraduate degree, I had worked as a DJ for five years at Mbaitu FM,” he explained.

He also worked at Sunaid Africa as the Head of Programmes between 2007 and 2009 before joining the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) as a research assistant, a position he held for one year.

He has also worked as a Laptrust and Olive Leaf Foundation project manager and trainer.

Dr Mutie is one of the renowned university dons in the country having taught at JKUAT, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and International Leadership University. Mutie has also taught at the University of Nairobi at the Department of Masters of Arts Peace and Education. 

In recognition of his academic acumen, Mutie was employed by World Bank as a senior consultant at The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

Dr Brian also worked for the Presidential ad-hoc taskforce where he was involved in developing a framework for recourse mobilisation for affordable housing by pension schemes.

He also worked with numerous international organisations to promote governance, peacebuilding, conflict mitigation, and resilience programs among others.

Notable organisations include the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), European Union and German Technical Co-operation Development (GIZ).

Dr Mutie told Kenyans.co.ke that he is considering joining politics and vying for either the Nairobi gubernatorial or senatorial positions.
