Eastleigh residents raised alarm over a building under construction where four workers had died under mysterious circumstances.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, June 15, the residents indicated that the latest casualty passed away after jumping off the storey building.

While calling on relevant authorities to investigate the matter, the witnesses added that the incident marked the fourth death since the construction of the building began.

Many of the workers at the site were foreigners from Uganda and Congo making it difficult for their families to seek justice.

“We don't know what happened to the first person who died at the building and it was not long before a second person was found dead in a pool of water inside the building.

“The third person was electrocuted and now there is this case of a man who fell from the third floor,” a resident lamented.

They blamed the owner of the building for failing to put into consideration the safety of its workers pleading with authorities to stop the contractor from continuing with the work.

“It will be better if the construction is just stopped to prevent any more people from dying at this site. Do they have to continue putting up this building if they cannot get certified engineers and workers?” another resident questioned.

In a separate incident on May 28, a two-year-old boy was hit on the head by debris from a 10-storey building under construction in Eastleigh and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Blocks from the building tore through the iron sheet of the house where the boy was watching cartoons on TV. Other children in a separate room escaped unharmed.

Construction of the building was stopped after police officers visited the site and determined that the owner and the contractor had not adhered to the regulations stipulated by the law.

"There is already trauma in the neighbourhood. I have spoken to a few people around here and they are not comfortable being around the premises,” the family lawyer George Omwansa stated after the incident.
