Structural Engineer Paul Mwangangi on Saturday, June 17, explained the importance of housing columns, also known as pillars, as structural elements that support the weight of the roof and other upper levels of a storey building.

In his view, columns are vital in the management of load since they help distribute the weight of the house evenly across the foundation.

"Columns can help to increase the stiffness of a house making it less likely to sway or bend in strong winds or earthquakes. They also offer a visual appeal of a home," The engineer stated.

As such, Mwangangi noted that when choosing house columns, it is important to consider a number of factors including (but not limited to) the materials, whether wooden, concrete, or steel.

He also explained the common costly mistakes that homeowners make when setting up house columns, especially home high-rise buildings.

1. Materials

Engineer Mwangangi explained that whether wood, concrete or steel, each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.

"For example, wood is a relatively inexpensive material but not as strong as concrete or steel. Concrete is a strong material but it is also heavy and can be difficult to work with," Mwangangi stated.

He added that steel is the strongest material but comes with a high price tag. It is important to choose the right material for the job taking into account the load the columns will need to support, the climate in which the columns will be installed, and the homeowner's budget.

2. Installation

The engineer noted that columns must be installed properly in order to provide adequate support for the house. The columns must be set at the correct height and depth, and they must be properly aligned.

"If the columns are not installed properly, they may not be able to support the weight of the house, which could lead to structural damage," Mwangangi explained.

3. Anchorage

Mwangangi advised that columns must be anchored on the foundation in order to prevent them from shifting or moving. The type of anchor that is used will depend on the type of foundation and the load that the columns need to support.

"For example, concrete piers are often used to anchor columns that are supporting a heavy load," Mwangangi stated.

4. Maintenance

According to Engineer Mwangangi, columns must be maintained in order to prolong their lifespan. This includes inspecting the columns regularly for any signs of damage, such as cracks or rot. If any damage is found, it must be repaired immediately.

"By avoiding these costly mistakes, homeowners can ensure that their house columns will provide adequate support for their homes and prevent costly repairs down the road," Mwangangi explained.
