Three people were reported dead after a Kenyan bus collided with a Mercedes Benz at Kabale District in Uganda on Thursday night, June 22.
According to Ugandan media reports, the accident occurred along Kiniogo Katuna Road.
Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to reckless driving, alleging that both drivers were speeding before colliding along a slope.
The Rwanda-bound bus veered off the road, damaged on its front part and the passenger door.
Notably, the personal car was severely damaged, with its front end bearing the brunt of the collision.
Its headlights were shattered, and its windscreen was broken as the high-end car crashed into a mangled mesh of metal.
The driver of the Mercedes Benz was said to be a popular Rwandese pastor who was travelling from Uganda to Rwanda. One passenger in the saloon car sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Kabale Regional Hospital.
Emergency personnel rushed to the scene to rescue the victims and ferry the deceased to a nearby morgue.
Additionally, the two vehicles were towed as traffic marshals restored sanity on the road.
Area residents lamented that the area was prone to road accidents as it lacked bumps and road signs to aid motorists in navigating.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 1,700 deaths for the period between January and May 2023. Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities.
This number was, however, a slight decrease from the same period in 2022, when 1,756 cases were reported.
NTSA listed drastic measures taken to enhance road safety, including filling the potholes on the road, installing more road signs, and cracking down on motorists who break traffic laws.
