Investments, Trade and Industry Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Evans Kidero's aides were among those injured in the Londiani accident that claimed over 45 lives on Friday, June 30.

In a statement shared by his Communication Officer Jack Nduri, the former Governor revealed that his driver and bodyguard were traveling in his car when they were hit and injured by the trailer that lost control at Londiani Junction.

Nduri noted that the two aides were aboard a black Range Rover, bearing the registration number KBS 786R when it was hit from behind and on the side.

“My driver and Sammy soldier (the bodyguard) were part of the accident victims at Londiani where more than 50 people lost their lives and a similar number in critical condition at various hospitals in Rift Valley," read part of the statement by Kidero.

The SUV was among several vehicles that were hit when a trailer lost control and rammed several automobiles at the Londiani junction along the Kericho-Nakuru highway on June 30, 2023.

Kidero stated that his driver, Christiano, and bodyguard, Sammy Wuod Asumbi, were involved in the accident, but expressed relief that the duo survived the tragic incident.

“We thank God for the lives of Christiano the driver and Sammy soldier Wuod Asumbi. We continue to pray that God Will continue to oversee safety on our roads,” Kidero added.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the accident and pledged his support to the victims of the tragic occurrence, including his aides.

"Our hearts go out to families who lost loved ones with heartfelt condolences and prayers,” Kidero stated in a statement that was shared by his aide.

Preliminary reports indicate that the truck lost control at the Londiani junction, running over several people including pedestrians and traders by the roadside. The truck also ran over business establishments and vehicles parked by the roadside.

The accident was confirmed by Londiani OCPD Agnes Kunga on Friday, June 30, night, who stated that over 60 injured victims were rushed to Londiani, Kericho and Nakuru hospitals amid a heavy downpour.

Kericho Governor Eric Mutai noted that the county had mobilised ambulances and put all health facilities on standby. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the scene of the accident on Saturday, July 1, and asked motorists to be careful while driving on the road.

"The accident is a reminder of the need for safety on our roads. We urge motorists to drive carefully and obey the traffic rules. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured victims," Murkomen stated.
