Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisumu launched a manhunt for goons accused of breaking into the Kisumu County Assembly on the night of Sunday, July 2.

Confirming the incident on Monday, July 3, Assembly Clerk Owen Ojuok stated that the thieves made away with several items including television sets used to air live proceedings.

Additionally, Ojuok noted that some Hansard equipment, including a public address system, were also missing.

He added that an unknown number of thugs broke into the building through the window catching the guards unawares.

Ojuok expressed shock at how the thieves gained access to the building which was under 24-hour surveillance.

“This must have been done by individuals who know the area very well. It's puzzling how they got in without our officers noticing,” the clerk stated.

He also noted that the county assembly was located close to the Kisumu Central Police Station and was manned by a private security firm with the assistance of two police officers.

The authorities have begun the process of reviewing the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage as part of investigations into the matter.

In a separate incident on July 3, 2021, CCTV cameras captured a man breaking into Laikipia County offices. He made his way into different offices and tore documents.

According to police, the suspect accessed the assembly buildings at night and ransacked several offices but left without stealing anything.

However, Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Lantano Nabaala later told the press that the police officers had finalised their investigation into the matter and assured them that there was no security threat.

"He came last night, we do not know who he was, and he did not steal anything, but he destroyed one computer," he noted.
