Christine Nafula, an expert in structural development, was on Thursday, July 6, unable to hold back her joy after securing her first formal job since moving to Nairobi in 2016.
Nafula, who secured a job opportunity as one of the construction workers at a local primary school where Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja was building a kitchen, explained that the opportunity has changed her family's living standards.
Interestingly, Nafula was informed of the job opportunity by her children, pulling her out of joblessness.
"It is my children who informed me that Governor Johnson Sakaja had started a construction initiative in their school and that there were job opportunities that I should seek out," the mother of four narrated.
"I have two children in this school, one in class one while the other in class eight. They are the ones who informed me of this job opportunity."
In a video that was shared by Governor Sakaja, the mother narrated how she struggled in poverty after searching and failing to secure jobs for close to 6 years.
To Nafula, her children were the last people she expected to help her secure employment in a tough economy that has seen employers cut staff and freeze hiring.
Governor Sakaja has encouraged Nafula to serve with diligence despite staying for so many years without being employed.
"Nafula is one of the workers at one of our kitchen sites. Her story is touching yet encouraging," Sakaja stated.
To express her gratitude, Nafula has thanked the Governor for the initiative which has given her a job to help support her young family.
"I moved from Bungoma County to Nairobi in search of job opportunities. I have since lived in Nairobi for more than six years, during which I engaged in a number of economic activities but I never got an employment opportunity," Nafula narrated.
"I desired to get a job, even construction work so that I would take my children to school but I failed to secure any job opportunity for the six years I was living in Nairobi. For me, this is a golden opportunity that I have always longed for."
She promised to work hard with her colleagues who were putting up the kitchens in order to ensure that Governor Sakaja's Dishi Mtaani Initiative becomes a reality for the children.
"My first kids also schooled here and completed their studies but they are still jobless. My children celebrated when I got this job opportunity. They immediately knew that God had shown mercy on us, and we were very happy," she stated.
"I am very happy with this job. My children are very happy because they can now take tea in the morning like other children. We must ensure that this project succeeds."
