Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, July 11, nabbed a former General Service Unit (GSU) officer believed to have masterminded a bank robbery two years ago.
The DCI, in a statement, revealed that the former police officer was behind a daring daylight bank robbery that took place in Matuu in July 2021.
In the latest case, the former GSU officer is accused of carrying out 9 incidents of robbery with violence in different parts of the country.
“The former police officer became particularly apparent in the bank robbery incident when his gang of five robbed the bank and disappeared with two AK47 rifles disarmed from officers manning it,” a statement from DCI read in part.
The agency indicated that its detectives pursued the case for two years, a period in which they also neutralised the suspect's gang.
Prior to apprehending the ex-GSU officer, one of the stolen rifles was recovered and several arrests were made.
The detectives also admitted to facing challenges in tracking down the mastermind because he retreated into the shadows when his accomplices were arrested or died during a police shootout.
They, however, did not give up the manhunt and on Tuesday, July 11, recovered the second rifle at the Takaungu area in Kilifi County.
It was during the Takaungu operation that the officers got intel that the ex-cop was hiding in Gilgil.
“Preliminary investigations have so far linked him to 9 robbery incidents reported in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Machakos counties.
“The suspect is being processed for arraignment with detectives advancing their investigations to nab more accomplices,” the DCI revealed.
In July 2021, the thugs stormed the bank at 9:00 am and injured two police officers guarding the institution and stole an unknown amount of money from tellers and customers present.
