CCTV camera from Pramukh Supermarket in Nyamasaria in Kisumu county captured residents rushing into the retail shop and looting following a chase that erupted Wednesday's protests.

From the footage, a large number of residents forced their way into the shop, picking anything they can carry, risking a stampede.

Some of the items picked included food items including cooking oil, maize flour, and wheat flour. Other items picked by the goons included diapers, pointing to the hardships that the majority are facing.

In the video, other protestors even went back for more after safely securing their first loot. Kisumu has been one of the counties badly hit by a new wave of anti-government protests.

According to the time stamp on the video, the incident occurred at around 5.48 pm during the first day of the three-day protest by the opposition.

The looters also carted away computers and teller machines from the payment counters.

The almost two-minute video depicts the pressure that businesspeople are going through in light of the recent protests amid a sluggish economy that has seen traders close shop.

Meanwhile, the government has vowed to crush the demonstrations through whatever means.

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Tuesday, July 18 assured Kenyans that police will ensure their safety and that of their businesses.

He explained that despite Article 37 allowing people to picket and demonstrate, those caught causing chaos and destruction to public property will be dealt with.

"Lessons from recent similar demonstrations that left trails of the destruction of property, injuries, and loss of lives, clearly indicate that such demonstrations are nothing but a threat to national security," he remarked.

On the other hand, the opposition accused the government of using goons to cause chaos and destroy property during the protests.
