Kikuyu Member of Parliament and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah on Wednesday, July 19, slammed the Catholic Church for its position on the ongoing protests.

In particular, the Leader of the Majority faulted Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria for his sentiments that the government should repeal the Finance Act.

Speaking in Narok County, the MP asked the archbishop to speak to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and plead with him to stop funding protests.

“I respect the clergy including my friend Muheria who is a close associate to Uhuru. I want to ask you Muheria, because Uhuru is your friend, if you want peace to prevail in the country, speak to him because he is the instigator of the protests,” he remarked.

Ichung’wah alleged that the protests were being used as a tool by the opposition to have a piece of the government.

The Kikuyu MP  also noted that Raila and Uhuru should respect that the Kenya Kwanza government came into office democratically.

During a presser by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, Muheria had asked Ruto’s government to consider the high cost of living while formulating tax policies.

“Within this background, the recently enacted Finance Act places an unsustainable burden on already distressed citizens especially those within the low-income bracket,” he remarked while calling for its repeal.

“Speak to your brother, friend, and parishioner Uhuru Kenyatta,” the third-term MP directed.

The Catholic Church is one of the largest Christian groups in the country and has had a say on many past issues of national interests and political reforms.

Raila Odinga stated on Thursday, July 20, that Kenyans would continue demonstrating until the Finance Act was repealed and the cost of living was brought down.

Uhuru Kenyatta is yet to release a statement on the allegations that he is the financier of anti-government protests.
