Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, July 21, dared President Ruto to go after him directly and stop targeting his family.
Speaking at his eldest son Jomo Kenyatta's residence in Karen after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided the younger Kenyatta's home, a visibly furious Uhuru lashed out at Ruto accusing him of waging a needless political war against him.
“The fact that I have been silent doesn’t mean I am scared. Come for me. What does my mother have to do with anything? What does my son have to do with anything? The former president remarked.
Responding to the question whether he believes the incident had anything to do with the ongoing protests, the former president poked holes into the government's tactics, vowing he will do everything in his capacity to defend his family.
“Unfortunately I have no other explanation to give because all these things are flowing in a row. I have had people who have been guarding my mother for the last 50 years withdrawn at night, I have now a situation where my son's home is being raided for things I don’t understand. So I ask myself what does this government want," Uhuru remarked.
Uhuru also dismissed the Kenya Kwanza administration's claims that he is funding Azimio protests.
“The issues that Kenyans are talking about have nothing to do with me. Have you seen me in any of those events? Have you seen me talk about any of those events?" Uhuru questioned.
The former Head of State asserted that the raid would not dissuade him from associating with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
“Am I not supposed to talk to my friends? Is that a crime in Kenya today? I thought the only crime was to associate with terrorists or bank robbers?” a furious Uhuru questioned.
Uhuru further told journalists that he had not talked to President Ruto to find a solution to the current political impasse.
“Why should I go look for somebody who doesn't want to talk to me?” he stated.
The Azimio Coalition Chairperson expressed dissatisfaction noting that he would let his lawyers settle the matter.
Guns
From Uhuru's remarks, it appeared that the DCI pursued the Kenyatta heir for unlawful possession of firearms. However, considering Ruto's ongoing political conflict with Uhuru over the Azimio demonstrations, the gun argument is inconsequential.
“They should tell me what they want with my children. They have removed their security, now I hear they want to remove their personal weapons, so what? Are they wanting to do that because they are planning something? ... If it's a question of illegal weapons they should tell the world. How many people have licensed weapons, even foreigners? Did they not follow the right procedure?” Uhuru charged.
