Ex-Standard Journalist Lands Job at Global PR Firm

Former Managing Editor, Digital at Standard Group, Caroline Kimutai has been appointed the Head of Editorial and Visual Storytelling at global public relations firm Hill+ Knowlton, a WPP Scangroup partner. 

In her new role, Kimutai will be working with brands across Africa to tell their stories in a compelling audio-visual and textual format. 

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, she explained that her focus in the new role would be primarily digital content, which has been her area of specialty for the last 18 years. 

"At WPP Scangroup, the culture is very dynamic as you work with innovative people who have expertise in Public Relations (PR) and marketing. So, my assignment can be put into one question: How do we tell stories across Africa?" She posed.

Prior to joining the PR firm, Kimutai worked at Standard Group for six years as the Head of Editorial Digital Content.

At SG, she was responsible for growing online audiences for broadcast and print brands namely: KTN Home, KTN News, Standard newspapers, Nairobian, Radio Maisha and the Standard Group online platforms.

Kimutai was critical to the transformation of the SG digital brands, coming at a time when legacy media outlets are struggling to tap into new revenue streams. 

She also worked at digital publisher Tuko Media as a Managing Editor, Kenya Institute of Management as an editor and Oakland Media Services as an editorial assistant.

She was part of the first cohort of graduates in the Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI) programme from Aga Khan University. 

Kimutai holds a bachelor's degree in Communication and Journalism from Moi University a Master of Arts in New Media and Society from the University of Leicester.

"The biggest lesson (in my career) is understanding our audiences. Being a journalist, data is king. Initially, we used to go with our gut feeling," she told Kenyans.co.ke. 

WPP Scangroup operates in sub-Saharan Africa, giving communications and marketing solutions to customers in the region.  

It has partnered with H+K to provide its clients with a variety of public relations expertise to solve complex communications challenges for its clients.
