A section of Nairobi Members of County Assembly have called out the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over alleged harassment of Nairobi County officials.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the leaders led by Nairobi County Assembly Minority Whip Mark Mugambi said that the harassment began when allegations that the county made illegal payments to nine private firms surfaced.

The leaders accused the agency of interrupting the county's operations even as the detectives continue with their investigations.

“Whatever we’ve seen recently are just sideshows and I believe they are being fueled by cartels who want to hit back at this administration,” Mr. Mugambi noted.

The MCAs urged the DCI to hold a meeting with the county officials to verify the veracity of the misappropriation allegations before proceeding with their operations, which may include seizing documents.

While the leaders expressed that they do not oppose an investigation into the City Hall Annex, they emphasized their concern that the proper procedures might not have been adhered to during the exercise.

“We’ve seen them give false information on what has been happening in this county. As they are doing their investigations, let them not affect the operations of the county government,” he noted.

Mr. Mugambi reiterated his full support for Governor Johnson Sakaja, stating that the accusations leveled against him are unfounded and lack basis.

Meanwhile, Governor Sakaja is yet to issue a statement, as he faces the first-ever City Hall probe since assuming office in 2022.

On August 4, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took possession of computers and crucial documents at City Hall for further processing in relation to the alleged corruption case.

The action was taken after the DCI requested the submission of tender documents, including tender invitations, preparations, submissions, opening and evaluations, as well as tender committee minutes.
