Kenya has been ranked among the top 30 dangerous countries globally in 2023, according to research carried out by Insider published by Yahoo Finance.
The country was ranked 25th position globally, two places below South Sudan, which has been embroiled in a civil war for years.
The compilation involved ranking each country based on their score in the latest Global Peace Index, the Global Terrorism Index, and the average homicide rate.
Kenya had a high terrorism index ranking of 20 and a global peace index ranking of 34.
As indicated by Insider, Kenya boasted a lower per capita homicide rate compared to the majority of countries within the top 30, with a ranking of 117.
“Terrorist deaths because of attacks by Al-Shabaab increased in Kenya, even though most attacks were in Somalia,” the report observes.
Of the listed East African countries, Kenya only bettered the Democratic Republic of Congo which was ranked as the second most dangerous country in the world after Nigeria.
Other East African nations included in the list were Burundi (28) and South Sudan (27).
Instructively, African countries dominated the top 30 list with 16 slots.
Mali was ranked third in the list with Somalia identified as the fifth most dangerous country in the world mainly due to the threat posed by Al Shabaab.
This comes even as Kenya reinforces its counter-terrorism strategy to safeguard the nation against the perils of terrorism and extremism.
Notably, Kenyan troops are already operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to restore peace.
Similarly, Kenya has entered into an agreement to dispatch police officers to Haiti, with the aim of restoring stability in a country currently under the control of gangs.
Ironically, Haiti did not feature in the top 30 list.
