Nancy Indoveria Kigunzu, known by her alias 'Mathe wa Ngara', is set to remain in police custody for an additional five days.
The Magistrate Court at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday, August 23, granted the prosecution's request for an extension to her detention to allow the police more time to question the accused and strengthen their case.
As such, the court hearing was rescheduled for Monday, August 28.
“Having gone through the submissions by both parties, I find that the prosecution application to detain the respondent is merited. The suspect is to be detained at Muthaiga Police Station for five days to allow police to complete their investigation,” Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku ruled.
Police aimed to extend her detention to analyse the confiscated contraband from the Ngara raid conducted last Tuesday.
They also contended that beyond marijuana, they had discovered Ksh13 million concealed within gunny bags.
In addition to these charges, Kigunzu faced allegations of evading the police, an accusation that her legal representative contested.
Notably, she was arrested on Monday night, mere hours after filing for anticipatory bail.
However, while taking the stand on Tuesday at the JKIA Law Courts, Kigunzu sought to be released on medical grounds, arguing that she suffers from anxiety.
The accused, implicated in a Nairobi trafficking ring, thus requested Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku to grant her a brief recess for medical treatment. This request was approved but under the condition of a police escort.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mathe wa Ngara's lawyer, Danstan Omari, confirmed that his client will be detained for five more days to allow the police to conduct further investigations. Other than Omari, Kigunzu is also represented by lawyer Cliff Ombetta.
The case will be mentioned on August 28, with Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku expected to issue further orders.
