Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on Wednesday ended his bursary allocation event prematurely after angry residents disrupted citing unfairness in the exercise.
Wamatangi was presiding over the distribution of bursary cheques for primary, secondary and university students, coming at a time when the governor is facing mounting calls for his ouster.
A section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) has called for the impeachment of the first-term governor, blaming him for mismanagement of the county while others have accused him of belittling county legislators.
Wamatangi was whisked away by his bodyguards amid the chaos that ensued, ending the exercise that was meant to give learners tuition money ahead of schools opening.
"We want the Governor to give the cheques to our Members of County Assembly to bring the bursaries to places close to us.
"We should not be walking for several kilometres to come all the way to Kiambu town for a distribution exercise which can easily be done in places near our homes," a resident lamented.
At least 37 MCAs have collectively issued a statement calling of national leaders, including President William Ruto and his deputy to intervene over the ongoing squabbled at Kiambu County.
The Ward Representatives on Wednesday, August 30, claimed that the country was being managed poorly by the Executive that had ignored the concerns of the people.
However, Governor Wamatangi noted that the MCAs have been pushing him to give them bribes and other political favours which are not realistic.
Weighing in on the matter, Kikuyu Council of Elders has asked Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to mediate Wamatangi and the MCAs.
Council national chairman Wachira Kiago on Wednesday, August 30, noted that Gachagua is best placed to unite Wamatangi and the Kiambu MCAs since he is currently the kingpin of the region.
As part of his responsibility, Kiago noted that he also working closely with his colleagues in the counsel to mediate between the warring groups.
"This is an important issue that must be addressed urgenly by the leaders of the region. We are not just bystanders, but key figures who can help bring harmony," Kiago stated.
