Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, is facing mounting pressure in the aftermath of a recent nationwide blackout that severely disrupted essential services.

Nairobi County and various regions across the country were plunged into an unexpected power outage, resulting in the disruption of critical services.

The outage went into record as the longest power blackout experienced in the country’s history, plunging Kenyans across the country into complete darkness.

A section of politicians are now calling for the Energy Cabinet Secretary to resign; among them former Laikipia governor Ndiritu Muriithi and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo.

“If we were truly living up to superior standards in the public space, Chirchir (CS, Energy & Petroleum) should be resigning. The system failed to work under his watch.” Ndiritu Muriithi noted.

Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo also called on CS Murkomen and Chirchir to step down over what he termed as failure in leadership.

“Murkomen and Chirchir should resign. The inconvenience they caused Kenyans is more dangerous and expensive than maandamano” Maanzo said.

There have been constant calls for an explanation into the frequent blackouts experienced in various parts of the country since last week, a situation that has since placed the CS under spotlight.

The CS is also set to appear before the Parliamentary Energy Committee for grilling over various issues in his Ministry.

During the session, Chirchir is expected to provide explanation on the events that led to the nationwide blackout.

The Kenya Power Chief Executive Officer Joseph Siror is also expected to appear before the parliamentary committee to answer questions pertaining last week's outage.

The events come days after an ultimatum was issued seeking further clarification on the blackout which has attracted national concern.
