Residents of six Nairobi estates will go without water for six hours on Thursday after Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) detected a major leak at Kabete Water Treatment Works Reservoir.

In a notice signed by NCWSC Managing Director, the company announced that it was shutting down the main pipeline that delivers water to Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Riverside, Kibera and Lang'ata.

The shut down is aimed at allowing NCWSC to conduct repairs on the line.

The affected areas along Waiyaki Way are Chiromo Road, Westlands, and Parklands. Others are Riverside, Lavington, Kilimani, Amboseli and areas along Gilanga road.

Five hospitals will also be affected including MP Shah, Nairobi Hospital, Kenyatta Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital and Forces Memorial Hospital.

Those living along Ngong Road will also be affected.

"We have a major leak at Kabete Water Treatment Works Reservoir that requires urgent repair works. Regretfully, we shall shut the water supply outlet from Kabete reservoir for six hours today August 31, 2023, from 10.00am to facilitate repairs," read the statement in part.

"Whilst every effort will be made to restore the supply of water as soon as possible, we request all customers in the affected areas to use water sparingly during the period of interruption."

In recent months, the company embarked on an expansion drive to boost delivery of water across the city.

On Wednesday, NCWSC acrried out renovations at Ngethu Treatment Works to enhance the facility's current treatment of 445,000 cubic meters per day of raw water from Thika Dam.

It is estimated that Kenya loses 47 per cent of water to leaks while only 56 per cent of Nairobi residents have access to clean water.
