The RADI unit as it has been dubbed, is one of the elite Administration Police Service(APS) units whose main job is responding to high security threats and emergencies.

According to APS’s 2023 newsletter, the unit that is officially known as the Rapid Deployment Unit was formed in 2000 to be APS’s main fighting unit following a series of security threats from the 60s down to the 80s that necessitated the service to form and disband several units.

This proved costly and ineffective forcing APS to come up with a permanent solution.

Today the unit is responsible for responding to urgent security situations, providing critical security operations during conflicts, national emergencies and international events.

"The Rapid Deployment Unit has always been on the forefront to swiftly respond to any security threats and
emergencies in our country on time," APS's Newsletter reads in parts.

Additionally, RADI maintains public order, and supports other units during high-level operations.

RADI isn't just about handling emergencies; they help combat banditry and cattle rustling, especially through collaboration with the Anti-Stock Theft Unit

Moreover, the Unit plays key roles during World rally championships, ensuring the security of all the participants including international competitors.

Interestingly ,in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), RADI maintains a Special Weapons and Tactical (SWAT) unit, ensuring safety in the city.

To stay sharp, RADI trains relentlessly, often with elite units from countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. They're always ready for rapid deployment in case of any emerging threats.

At the helm of the unit is Unit Commandant Lawrence Owino, MBS - AIG., a man who has several accolades under his belt.

Mr. Owino who took over the unit’s leadership in 2021 has served in several positions throughout his career earning several awards along the way.

His most prestigious award was the Moran of the order of the Burning Spear (MBS) that was presented to him by President William Ruto earlier this year.

Owino was also nominated for Outstanding Police Service Awards (OPSA) by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in conjunction with the Kenya National Human Rights and Equality Commission (KNHREC) and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), for being the most outstanding police officer in the entire coastal region.
