"The future of our nation depends on all of us, and what we do today will affect all of us tomorrow, especially our young learners, for the future belongs to them," read the statement in part.

"Today I officially launched the First Lady Mazingira Award at the KICC in Nairobi. The award will target learners, including those with special needs, in over 89,000 public and private primary and secondary schools in all 47 counties of Kenya."

She explained that the programme was targeting school-going kids given that the future belonged to them

Rachel expressed that the students could be influential and make a difference in society and complement the government's efforts in its climate change programme which includes the 15 billion tree plan.

"The power to shape our world lies in each of us, but especially in our young people. Let us empower them to become the driving force in our mission to protect our environment for them and future generations," she stated.

During the launch, she also unveiled the logo and the tagline of the award. Students who participated in the logo contest were also recognised at the event.

Cash rewards for the award are yet to be unveiled.
