Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has ordered law enforcement to arrest and prosecute suspects who destroyed Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza's event.
The suspects attacked during the event held in Maua Igembe South where Mwangaza was distributing household items to the locals under the Okolea Program.
During the altercation, the attackers slaughtered a cow meant for donation and burnt down mattresses to be distributed.
Kindiki noted that the police will conduct investigations on the planners, abetters, and financiers of the violence witnessed on Sunday.
"Citizens, including political leaders of all ranks and all political parties or formations, must carry out their activities lawfully and peacefully without exception," he stated.
Kindiki emphasised that no violence will be tolerated as it only undermines national security and the rule of law.
On her part, Mwangaza condemned the incident and violence displayed by the rowdy youth in the vicinity.
During the event, they blocked roads and threw stones, forcing the police to use teargas and disperse the crowd.
She added that it was unacceptable to disrupt a charitable function aimed at helping those in need.
"We strongly believe that the perpetrators of these heinous acts need to face the full force of the law," she stated.
She called upon security agencies to ensure the matter does not occur again and all those involved are held culpable.
The governor however emphasised she will not stop helping in the region as a way of improving their lives. She invited other well-wishers to support the initiative and help uplift the needy in society.
