The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) unravelled a cross-border con syndicate after an Indian businessman lost Ksh267 million to a well-orchestrated scheme.

In a statement dated Saturday, the Indian businessman had supplied caustic soda used to manufacture detergent to five companies based in Uganda through the port of Mombasa.

The agency added that the five companies' contacts went under the radar after the consignment reached Kenya, prompting the Indian businessman to fly to Kenya.

As per DCI's account, the companies ordered the supplies between December 12 last year and April 22 this year.

The goods were delivered to the Port of Mombasa on separate dates between January 31 and May 15 this year.

Following the report filed by the tycoon, the DCI reached out to their Uganda counterparts, who assisted in tracking down the company officials

Given that the crime was cross-border, the DCI also sought help from Interpol with a sting operation held in Uganda on Friday, October 6.

"Detectives have made a breakthrough in the investigation of an international fraud case where businessmen based in India lost goods worth over Ksh267 million to suspected fraudsters based in Uganda, assisted by local thugs.

"Yesterday, the team recovered 7,420 bags equivalent to seven containers of the product at a logistical company located along Bweyogere Industrial Area in Kampala. Uganda," read the statement in part.

The DCI added that the multi-agency team was still trailing the rest of the consignment believed to have been distributed across Uganda.

A manhunt for the main suspects in the case has also been launched, with the DCI noting that the suspects will be apprehended in no time.

Kenyans will information over the scheme were asked to reach out to the agency through 0800 722 203.
