Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday said that the government has already begun effecting a new policy ordering the transfer of police officers who have served for three years or more in 1 station.

Appearing before the Senate National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, the Cabinet Secretary further directed that the process be completed within 60 days threatening that those who fail to heed the directive will have their salaries witheld.

“The directive by the government is that any officer after the 60 days who continues to resist or for whatever reason does not move to a different station, the salary will be stopped. It is that serious,” Kindiki added.

Kindiki while revealing that the directive was issued two weeks ago said that the government has also taken the decision to ensure that police officers assigned to undertake special operations spend a maximum of one year at a station.

“For those doing serious operations, normally we move them within one year because of the kinetic and demanding nature of the operations they are involved in,” Kindiki said.

The CS who appeared before the William Cheptumo-led committee further disclosed how police officers who die in the line of duty are compensated.

Kindiki revealed that the officers are entitled to a package that includes a one-off payment which is equivalent to 8 years of gross salary.

While addressing the recent surge in insecurity in Lamu County, Kindiki also revealed that the government would by Friday publish all the names of the suspects linked to unrest in Lamu.

Kindiki further ordered all suspects whose names will appear in the gazette notice to surrender themselves to the nearest police station, KDF camp, or chief's office once the government publishes the notice.

Kindiki appeared before the Committee to answer questions on the state of security in Laikipia and the wider North Rift regions.

This comes after the Cabinet Secretary deployed a contingent of elite police units to Sondu along the Kisumu, Kericho border on October 5 to contain the escalation of violent crime .

The CS indicated that the move was necessitated by the loss of lives and destruction of property.

"The special deployment is to be supervised jointly by the Rift Valley and Nyanza regional security teams with firm instructions to ensure immediate resumption of normalcy and the arrest and prosecution of each and every perpetrator of the horrific crimes that have been committed against the people of Sondu Town and its environs," read the statement in part.
