Police have arrested five people for allegedly assaulting Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina which took place in Kirinyaga County on August 22.

In a charge sheet obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, the five men were arrested by officers based at the Kerugoya Police Station on Wednesday.

The five were detained at the station and presented at the Kerugoya Law Courts before Principal Magistrate Cheruto Kipkorir on Thursday morning.

As per the charge sheet, the five were charged with causing grievous harm contrary to sections 231 and 234 of the penal code.

"The five on the 22nd day of August, 2023 at around 1200hrs in Kirinyaga County, jointly with others not before the Court assaulted one Hon Jane Njeri Maina causing her grievous bodily harm," read the charge sheet in part.

Each of the five accused was released on a Ksh50,000 cash bail pending the mentioning of the case set for November 2.

Njeri was assaulted while she was in Kirinyaga County attending a meet-and-greet event in Kerugoya.

Following the incident, she was airlifted to Nairobi to receive medical attention and was admitted to a city-based hospital having sustained injuries to the head.

According to the MP, the attack was politically instigated alleging that some of the attackers were from the area governor, Anne Waiguru's camp.

"The events of that day shattered my idealistic view of politics and exposed the dark underbelly of power struggles and political rivalries in Kirinyaga County," she stated during a personal statement in Parliament.

"Notably, the planners and executors of this attack are well-known to me."

However, Waiguru denied the allegations and even issued a demand letter to the County MP to recant her statements.

“Our instructions are that the said publication on your Facebook page is untrue, false, reckless and defamatory. The said publication is further malicious and is meant to tarnish the image of our client and disparage her outstanding reputation,” read the letter by Waiguru's lawyer.
