Njeri Maina, Kirinyaga Woman Representative, has taken a significant step towards her pursuit of justice by recording a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detailing her chilling encounter with alleged hired goons.
Arriving at the DCI offices in Kerugoya, Maina, a politician elected under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, was accompanied by her legal counsel.
Her aides, who were part of her entourage, also pushed her in a wheelchair following her transfer to Kerugoya Level V Hospital from Nairobi Hospital, where she was admitted on Tuesday this week.
Reports stated that Maina, one of the youngest MPs in the country, was sought to press charges against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who she accused of hiring the goons to attack her at her Tuesday political rally earlier this week.
A section of Kirinyaga residents caught wind of the 28-year-old's presence and rushed to the DCI offices to offer their support.
The local residents, most of whom were women, were heard chanting songs and calling for justice for the atrocities allegedly meted against their leader.
Police were deployed to man the swelling tide of supporters congregated at the DCI offices in Kerugoya to ensure traffic flows along the highway.
Njeri was still inside the DCI offices recording her statement by the time of publishing this article.
On Tuesday, her communications team told Kenyans.co.ke that the goons accosted Njeri as she engaged her followers in Kerugoya.
The MP incurred critical injuries on her head, prompting medical emergency service providers to evacuate her to Nairobi, where she was attended to.
"Yes, Mhesh was evacuated after the Governor (Kirinyaga chief boss Anne Waiguru) sent goons to attack her but failed," the communications officer claimed.
While admitted at Nairobi Hospital, Njeri was visited by her colleagues, including Moses Wetangula, National Assembly Speaker, Josses Lelmengit, Emgwen MP, Woman Representatives Linet Chepkorir Toto (Bomet) and Esther Passaris (Nairobi) and Eric Muchina, Kerugoya Ward MCA. Other MPs called for the arrest of Waiguru.
"Mr. Speaker. We must condemn violence in all its shapes. Violence is violence, whether it happens in Kondel or Kirinyag. This atrocity that has been meted against our own colleague by the county governor of Kirinyaga or her agents must be investigated immediately," Opiyo Wandayi, National Assembly Minority Leader and Ugunja MP, stated while addressing the House on Tuesday.
However, Waiguru reiterated her innocence and ]urged local politicians to uphold peace and unity.
"It has come to my attention through the media that Kirinyaga Women Rep Hon Njeri Maina was attacked by youth while going to answer to police summons, together with Baragwi MCA Hon Mathenge, concerning the breakage of County Water Project on Saturday.
"I wish to condemn any acts of violence and reiterate that, no matter the reason. We do not condone or tolerate violence. I therefore urge the police to take immediate action against those involved," Waiguru stated via her social media pages.
