Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Sunday intercepted a Toyota Prado ferrying drugs worth Ksh11 million in Kisii County.
In a statement, the agency revealed that the suspect behind the wheel was transporting the drugs to Kilgoris, Kisii County when the officers, who were on active patrol at the time, asked him to pull up.
"During the recovery, the officers who were on patrol sighted a white Toyota Prado that was loaded with a suspicious consignment," read part of the statement.
However, the driver defied orders and sped off to avoid arrest, and upon reaching Magena area, he made a quick U-turn back towards Kenyenye.
"When he realised that he was being trailed by our men, he abandoned the vehicle within the Metembe area and escaped on foot," DCI revealed.
Officers seized the vehicle and recovered Ksh11 million worth of bhang weighing approximately 379Kgs.
"Six sacks and fifteen bales of leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa all weighing 379Kgs were recovered," DCI reported.
The vehicle was taken to the Kenyenye Police Station and the drugs were placed under police custody pending further investigations.
This comes even as officers from various agencies continue to launch crackdowns on drug trafficking.
For instance, a woman was arrested on Sunday for attempting to smuggle narcotics worth Ksh3.5 million in Mombasa.
The middle-aged woman was apprehended by DCI who were acting on a tip-off from the public leading to the arrest.
Reports from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveal that there has been an increase in the number of drug trafficking cases reported at the Kenyan coast over the past few years.
