Nancy Asiko Onyango, Director of the Office of Internal Audit and Inspection (OIA) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will leave her role on January 29, 2024, when her second term ends.

In a letter dated October 23, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed Onyango’s exit after serving at the helm of IMF for six years.

"Nancy's contributions, through her work and dedication over the past six years, ensure that the Fund meets the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the service of our membership," Georgieva stated.

She lauded Onyango's relentless efforts while working for the global organisation, indicating that the Kenyan native was a strong advocate for a work-life balance and championed mental health and wellness.

Onyango also helped in mentoring many staff members and was a regular presenter on various diversity, equity, and inclusion forums at the IMF, the World Bank, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

"Nancy's openness and advocacy for staff have endeared her to colleagues and peers alike. The management team and I are especially grateful for her candid sharing of the analyses and insights from her team's advisory and assurance work," Georgieva added.

The Internal Audit and Inspection Office held by Onyango is obliged to assess the IMF’s internal Control and governance processes independently.

Before her appointment to IMF, Onyango worked at two global multinational audit and advisory firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst and Young, over a span of 25 years and was based in several locations, including the United Kingdom, Europe, and across Africa.

She has also worked as a gender leadership specialist and remains keen to support women in achieving their career goals and continues to sit on the Boards of Global Give Back Circle based in New York and Fairtrade America based in Washington DC.

In March this year, Onyango was among five shortlisted candidates for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, now held by Dr. Kamau Thugge, also a former IMF employee.

Onyango holds a B. Comm (1st Class Honours) from the University of Nairobi, an MBA (Management Information Systems) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from USIU- Africa.

She is also a qualified CPA, a Certified Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) practitioner, a Certified Information Systems Auditor Certified in Corporate Governance for Enterprise IT (CGEIT) from ISACA International, and a Certified in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) from the global Institute of Internal Auditors.

According to IMF, the search for Nancy Onyango’s successor is set to kick off soon.
