Police are treating the wife of the late 47-year-old taxi driver Evans Moracha as an alibi in his murder case.

Detectives who are still piecing evidence together, since retrieving Moracha's body from River Sagana in Murang'a County stated that the deceased was picked up from his home on the night of October 11, 2023, in the presence of his wife.

According to a police report filed under OB 33/14/10/2023, officers drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi suspect that the wife was in contact with two prime suspects in the case, Police Constable Kennedy Kinywa and a civilian, Stanley Muthike.

Kinywa, stationed at Lang'ata Sub-County, was on Thursday arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of the taxi driver.

Following a thorough search at the officer's residence, detectives discovered a mobile phone and a stun torch, which were subjected to a forensic analysis.

In new findings, cyber-crime detectives established that Moracha's wife had communicated with the two suspects, and numerous conversations related to payment for a specific job were retrieved.

"Police hence suspect that Moracha's wife, who is likely to be arrested soon, played a central role in her husband's dreadful murder, and it is possible that her report of her husband going missing was an afterthought following the discovery of the body in Murang'a."

Detectives believe that the officer has crucial information about the murder of the deceased.

The case commenced when the driver went missing from his home in the Mihang'o area of Utawala in early October, raising concerns about his whereabouts.

His wife reported him missing at the Mihang'o Police Station, noting that her husband's vehicle had been gone for three days. She also mentioned that his phone went offline on October 14, 2023.

However, detectives ascertained that the deceased's car was discreetly driven back to the Utawala neighbourhood and abandoned at a safe distance from their home a few days after his disappearance.

On the same day, the wife filed the report, the Assistant Chief of Githuri Sub-location in Murang'a County alerted the police about an unidentified male body found at River Sagana. The body was unclothed and had multiple head injuries.

Police officers transported the body to Murang'a Level 5 Hospital Mortuary for autopsy and identification through fingerprinting and analysis at the National Registration Bureau (NRB) offices.

The authorities confirmed the body to be that of Evans Moracha, and family members also positively identified him. DCI officers from the Nairobi regional office later proceeded to Nyeri's Ruringu village, where they arrested the first suspect.

During interrogation, the suspect directed them to Ongata Rongai, where the detectives arrested a second suspect, an officer who is currently on interdiction. Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer held the rank of Constable and was designated as a driver at the Lang'ata-based station.

"Upon questioning regarding the abduction of the taxi driver, he guided the officers to Olekasasi ward within Ongata Rongai township, where his accomplice was arrested, namely Kennedy Kinywa, a police constable driver stationed at Akila police station in Lang'ata Sub County," the police report stated.

"Investigations are ongoing to uncover the motive behind the homicide."

Both suspects have since been separately placed in custody at Capital Hill and Kilimani Police Stations as investigations continue.
