A lorry driver and his passengers were rescued on Thursday by a helicopter after raging floods submerged the vehicle following a heavy downpour.

The driver operating in Samburu County had attempted to drive through rushing waters but he was overpowered by the raging water flow.

As the lorry got submerged by the water, the occupants got out through the window to try and stay atop the vehicle.

Residents who witnessed the incident called for rescue operators and the police to rush to the scene.

The rescue mission was led by the Ol Malo Ranch Chopper and the Tropic Air team.

During the rescue mission, the helicopter made several rounds to get the victims to dry land before the lorry got fully submerged in the water.

The residents were at the scene, knee-deep in the flood water, recording the incident and cheering on the rescue team.

"That's the way to go, at least they have rescued the child first. Good job," one of the locals was heard in the background.

It took about five minutes for all the passengers to be safely transported to dry land. Some of the young passengers were carried across the shallow waters by the rescue team.

Eventually, the lorry was submerged in the water and carried away as heavy rainfall continued.

The incident follows a warning by the Kenya Met Department that the country will experience heavy rainfall in the coming days.

The Met Department has continued to warn residents in areas experiencing more rainfall to be cautious.

"Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially downstream. Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows when raining to minimize exposure to lightning strikes," the department warned.
