Police based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) arrested a foreigner after he was found in possession of military-grade bullets.

According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday and the man reported to be from Ghana had three 9mm bullets.

It was revealed that the man was heading to Dubai and was being screened when the bullets were discovered in his luggage.

Police sought to establish where the man got the bullets with preliminary investigations indicating that the bullets were sourced locally.

On the other hand, officers from the elite  Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) were also called in to profile the man.

It is yet to be clear whether the man had a gun on him at the time of the arrest.

However, he is still being held by detectives who are seeking to establish the source of the guns and the motive for planning to have the bullets on the plane.

"A probe is ongoing to establish the source of the bullets," police stated.

The 9mm ammunition is mostly used for combat or self-defence operations by military organisations all over the world.

Following his arrest, the man faces seven years imprisonment.

"If the firearm concerned is a prohibited weapon of a type specified in paragraph (b) of the definition of that term contained in section 2 or the ammunition is ammunition for use in any such firearm be liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than seven years and not more than fifteen years.

"If the firearm is any other type or the ammunition for any weapon not being a prohibited weapon be liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five, but not exceeding ten years," read the Firearms Act in part.
