A driver on Friday narrowly escaped death after the car he was driving hit the rear of an Embassava Sacco bus along the Outering road near Kware stage in Nairobi.
According to several eyewitnesses, the driver of a white Toyota Vitz was trying to avoid a head-on collision with a lorry and, in the process rammed into the bus that was parked by the roadside.
The small car suffered extensive damage following the impact including the bonnet, windscreen, and headlights. The driver of the small car escaped with minor injuries.
The Vitz was towed away to the side of the road for inspection by the police.
In contrast, the bus sustained minor damage primarily to its rear side but remained operational, with no reported injuries to any of its occupants.
The incident along the Outering road comes a fortnight after a bus collided with a truck on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander Maina confirmed to the press that the crash occurred between the towns of Machinery and Kambu in Makueni along the busy highway on October 18.
Five people died in the accident while several others who were injured were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Photos from the crash showed that the bus was badly damaged while the trailer overturned at the accident scene.
According to the latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), records show that 2,124 people lost their lives in road carnages between January and June this year.
Incompetent and unfit drivers were blamed for the increase in fatalities, mostly pedestrians at 571 followed by motorcycle operators with 449 casualties.
