Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has called for the resignation of Controller of Budget Margret Nyakang'o after her damning revelations where she alleged that the salaries of top State officials are over-budgeted by over Ksh1 billion.
Speaking before the National Dialogue Committee (NDC), Cheruiyot said the CoB's revelation is an admission of failure since State officers are required to seek approval from her office before making huge withdrawals including to facilitate the payment of salaries.
''We should have asked her to resign because if you are allowing withdrawals through what is being revealed to the Committee, as budgeted corruption then it means either, you are incompetent or you are part and parcel of those that are stealing from us,'' the Senator posed.
The Kericho Senator spoke when posing questions to Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung'u who appeared before the Committee to address the current state of Kenya's economy.
Appearing before the NDC last week, Nyakang'o expressed grave concerns with the scale of pre-planned corruption in government revealing that her own salary had been budgeted three times what she actually receives.
"When I was doing the budget for consolidated funds services, this is where my salary is paid from, I found out that my salary was budgeted at three times what I'm paid,'' Nyakang'o stated.
"I am the only state office in my institution. So, there's nothing like confusion there; I am all alone. So, I asked them why is the budget showing three times. I have not received the answer," she told the committee.
The Controller of Budget further revealed that the budget for her office was quoted at Ksh18.6 million, an amount which differs greatly from her actual annual salary of Ksh.9.51 million.
In her revelations, the Controller of Budget further stated that the Treasury had pegged the expenditure of the Office of the President, and the Office of the Deputy President at Ksh42.4 million which differs from the gazetted amount of Ksh32.05 million, making it Ksh10 million more.
The CoB further raised the red flag citing a large discrepancy in state officers' salaries in the 2023/2024 budget, revealing that Ksh1.5 billion could not be accounted for.
CS Ndung'u further defended the government from scrutiny over the high cost of living stating the government has already put interventions.
''The government has taken long-term sustainable approach to subsidizing production of goods instead of consumption to respond to the rising cost of living,'' CS Njuguna emphasized.
