Gor Mahia Football Club has been slapped with a heavy fine after its fans went on a rampage during a match against Murang'a Seals at Kasarani Stadium last Saturday.
In a letter issued by Sports Kenya, the top-flight club has been ordered to pay a total amount of Ksh2 million for the damage caused to the stadium.
''You are, therefore, required to pay the amounts indicated above to enable Sports Kenya to replace the seats and carry out the other repairs,'' the statement read in part.
Sports Kenya further detailed the fine by breaking it down into three components.
Firstly, the club is required to pay Ksh1.47 million for the repair of 295 seats, at a rate of Ksh5,000 each.
Additionally, the club faces a surcharge of Ksh500,000 for the damage to four electrical panels incurred during the fixture.
Lastly, there is an additional charge of Ksh20,000 for the restoration of 12 wooden panels that were also destroyed during the match.
This brings the cumulative fine amount to Ksh1.99 million.
In its statement, Sports Kenya further ordered Gor Mahia to provide a report detailing the club's plan to prevent such occurrences from happening in the future.
The body further fired a warning to the club's management warning of dire consequences if it fails to institute corrective measures.
''Failure to submit an action plan, Sports Kenya will have no option but to deny fans entry during any other matches involving your team,'' the letter stated.
Violence ensued at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on Saturday. During the match against Murang'a Seals, Gor Mahia fans invaded the pitch, destroyed seats, and beat up a referee.
This forced an intervention from the police who lobbed teargas canisters to quell the situation and disperse the rowdy fans.
This is not the first time Gor Mahia has been sanctioned over its fans' conduct.
In 2018, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) fined the club Ksh 500,000 after its fans exhibited prohibited behaviour during a match against Rwandese side Rayon Sports at Kasarani Stadium.
The club was fined Ksh 1.5 million again by CAF in 2019 after its fans threw bottles and invaded the pitch during a match against Algerian club Hussein Dey.
